Objective:

The aims of the two and half day workshop will be to:

improve the level of comprehension among IOTC Members on how the scientific process informs the management process for managing of IOTC species and ecosystems
increase the awareness of IOTC Members to their obligations, as stipulated in the Commissions’ Conservation and Management Measures which are based on rigorous scientific advice
Improve the decision making process within the IOTC.

Summary:

All documents submitted to the Scientific Committee (or its Working Parties) shall be submitted to the IOTC Secretariat no later than 15 days prior to the start of the Scientific Committee meeting. Any documents submitted less than 15 days prior, shall be considered for information purposes only. (IOTC Rules of Procedure, 2014, Appendix IV, para. 9)

The workshop will cover the following core topics:

Kobe Plots, management objectives and MSE (joint session with the scientists)
Structure and functioning of the IOTC
Current status of IOTC stocks
Communicating IOTC science to managers
Lessons to be learnt from other fisheries management structures
How to interpret science advice as a manager
Country level implications arising from stock assessment results and management options analyses
How the Commission uses Science advice to develop Conservation and Management Measures
Implications of current Conservation and Management Measures for CPCs
Effects of poor compliance with IOTC requirements on the provision of scientific advice and management.

Deadlines:

Nomination and subsequent applications to attend the workshop should be received no later than the 1 August 2014 at [email protected] and should include the following information:

A letter of nomination with the Name of the competent agency, the name and position of applicant
Location and contact details.
