The aim of this project was to strengthen the ability of fisheries administrations of IOTC developing coastal States to meet their obligations to sustainably manage certain fish stocks. It focused on three member countries – Bangladesh, Malaysia and Somalia – that have been experiencing difficulties with implementing the IOTC Conservation and Management Measures (CMMs).
The project succeeded with providing legal support to IOTC developing States, enabling them to review their fisheries and related national legislation, identify legislative gaps and address how these gaps could be filled using the IOTC Legislative Framework. As a result of the many activities, including the Compliance Support Missions, new manuals, training packages and other capacity-building activities, the project improved the capability of the selected member States to comply with IOTC conservation and management measures. Lessons learned from this project will be used to strengthen other IOTC developing coastal States with their implementation IOTC CMMs with the aim to achieve sustainable fisheries in the entire IOTC area of competence.
