Working Party on Data Collection and Statistics (WPDCS)

Purpose

The Working Party on Data Collection and Statistics (WPDCS) is the technical body responsible for reviewing the completeness, accuracy and timeliness of fisheries statistics submitted to the IOTC for tuna, tuna-like species and other associated species. It evaluates the status of data collection, processing and reporting by CPCs in relation to Commission requirements and adopted Conservation and Management Measures.

In accordance with its Terms of Reference, the WPDCS identifies gaps and weaknesses in national data systems, recommends actions to improve data quality and compliance with reporting obligations, and monitors progress in the implementation of these actions. It also provides data-related guidance and recommendations to support the work of the other IOTC Working Parties and the Scientific Committee.

The WPDCS dedicated to the task of reviewing the quality of the statistics available for tuna, tuna-like, and other species of interest to the IOTC, and to review the status of collection, processing, and reporting of data, as required by the Commission. Based on this review, the Working Party recommends actions to improve the quality of statistics in countries having data collection or reporting that falls short of the IOTC requirements. The WPDCS has also the role of compiling data recommendations relating to species covered by other working parties and follow-up on the implementation of these actions in the countries concerned.
