Working Party on Neritic Tunas (WPNT)

Purpose

The Working Party on Neritic Tunas (WPNT) is the technical body responsible for reviewing and analysing issues related to the fisheries and stock status of the six neritic tuna and tuna-like species under the IOTC mandate, including mackerel and seerfish: bullet tuna (Auxis rochei), frigate tuna (Auxis thazard), kawakawa (Euthynnus affinis), longtail tuna (Thunnus tonggol), Indo-Pacific king mackerel (Scomberomorus guttatus), and narrow-barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson).

In accordance with its Terms of Reference, the WPNT evaluates fisheries data, stock assessments, and management measures for these coastal and neritic species, and provides science-based advice and recommendations to the Scientific Committee and the Commission to support sustainable management of neritic tuna fisheries in the IOTC area of competence. The WPNT reviews and analyses issues relevant to the fisheries and status of the six neritic tuna and tuna-like (mackerel - seerfish) species under the IOTC mandate.
