Working Party on Temperate Tunas (WPTmT)

Purpose

The Working Party on Temperate Tunas (WPTmT) is the technical body responsible for reviewing and analysing issues related to the fisheries and stock status of the two temperate tuna species under the IOTC mandate: albacore (Thunnus alalunga) and southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii). It should be noted that southern bluefin tuna is currently managed by the Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (www.ccsbt.org).

In accordance with its Terms of Reference, the WPTmT evaluates fisheries data, stock assessments, and management measures for temperate tuna, and provides science-based advice and recommendations to the Scientific Committee and the Commission to support sustainable management of these species throughout the IOTC area of competence. The WPTmT reviews and analyses issues relevant to the fisheries and status of the two temperate tuna species under the IOTC mandate, noting that southern bluefin tuna has been passed to CCSBT for management (www.ccsbt.org).
