A propos du projet:

This project contributes to improve the scientific information on the tuna and tuna-like fisheries operating in the IOTC area of competence. Access to datasets is crucial to enhance the scientific elements of sustainable fisheries management, but this type of information is currently limited due to the variable quality and quantity of data available for analysis.

To tackle this, the project will conduct electronic monitoring trials and improve methods for stock assessments, data quality, and the understanding of the biology and ecology of target and bycatch species. This will be focused mainly on areas where substantial improvements are required, such as the lack of catch data available for tropical and temperate tuna, gillnet fleets, neritic tuna species and bycatch species.

The results of the project will lead to better scientific knowledge of the ecosystems managed by the IOTC with the aim to ensure appropriate management of all species impacted by IOTC fisheries.

Project activities:
  • Conduct abundance estimations of target fisheries and bycatch.
  • Develop Management Procedure for Swordfish for Indian Ocean Swordfish.
  • Carry out tag modelling project for tropical tunas.
  • A review of the data poor stock assessment methods for Indian Ocean tuna fisheries.
  • Carry out an Albacore growth curve analysis, and Albacore biological sampling across the Indian Ocean, and explore options for establishing collaborative sampling program for Albacore tuna in the Indian Ocean.
  • Conduct preparatory work for ecological risk assessments for Shark species in the Indian Ocean region.
  • Review longline and purse seine size frequency data, complete a report and key recommendations on the based on the results of the review.
  • Support the implementation of the IOTC Regional Observer Standards, and conduct a Regional Observer Scheme standards review workshop.
  • Test electronic monitoring systems on small-scale longline gillnet vessels in Sri Lanka.
  • Carry out data compliance and support missions to improve compliance with IOTC Resolution 15/02 on mandatory statistical reporting requirements in I.R Iran, Indonesia, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Tanzania, and Oman, and provide assistance to strengthen national fisheries data collection.
  • Translate and produce the IOTC Species Identification Cards.
  • Assess the effectiveness of management measures of sea turtles.
  • Develop a strategic plan for the IOTC Scientific Committee.
